Children’s Mathematical Literature
Series I Love
Math is Categorical Book Series is filled with humorous, rhyming books about a variety of mathematical concepts-Time, addition, subtraction, measurement (distance and mass), pattern, fractions ,shapes, and money.
Why I like : Children are fully engaged in the story because of the humor and rhyme, and they learn about new mathematical concepts. Books can be used as introductions or along the learning journey. Sometimes I start the book and leave for them to finish or pick it up again later, as the study continues….Don’t want to give it all away.
Greg Tang books are engaging and poetic. The topics vary from counting, skip counting, problem solving, art- symmetry, mind-stretching math riddles, abstract/algebraic thinking, multiplication, and integrate science.
Why I Like: The delightful illustrations and rhyming pattern of text draw students in as they explore mathematical concepts. Can be used as introduction, mid-units, or even as a closer.
This series is a wonderful set of books to read with your children at bedtime. There are varying levels of challenge for all ages to engage in the mathematics in the story.
Why I like: This book is an easy way for parents and children to engage joyfully with math, gives value to math, and shares the importance of reading about math.
