Applied Math Camp
Applied Math Camps occur over one or two weeks. students work cooperatively to build understanding around mathematical concepts. They apply new understandings to create daily snacks, sew clothing, and design accessories like wallets, change purses, “Ugly Stuffies”, complex bags, and journal covers. Their studies and creations are dependent on where members of the group are in their mathematical development and what piques the group's interest. Students keep a Math Journal to show their understanding of concepts, skills development, and ability to identify steps necessary to create their projects with pictures, numbers, and words.
What is a Typical Schedule?

“My son had a blast at math camp—it was one of his favorite activities all summer. I was blown away by how much he learned in a short period of time- from making measurements to sew a pillow to using conversions to bake spinach cookies, he discovered new ways to apply math to everyday activities. He says he’d love to go back to math camp! He ranked it above Stanford golf camp, Galileo, and Avid adventure camp. Thank you Stephanie for putting this together!” —Alice

My son’s favorite camp this summer was Stephanie’s Applied Math Camp for rising K students. Each day, he came home beaming and excited to tell me about all of the cool things he did. He loved sewing a stuffy and a bag to hold cards, and cooking noodles and spinach cookies was a hit! Amazingly, he learned a lot of practical math skills along the way! Stephanie has a knack for making math fun and is able to connect incredibly well to young children. Stephanie combines games that build number sense such as Bluff and Twister with activities that involve measurements such as cooking and sewing. My son keeps on asking when he can return to Stephanie’s camp! I would highly recommend it! —Nisha
Our 5-year-old had a ball at Stephanie’s math camp last summer. She played math games, solved number puzzles, practiced cooking and played outside with friends. The children even learned how to run a sewing machine, which they used to make stuffed animals they designed. The children also made little bags for the “10s” cards they created. (She is still playing with those “10s” cards two months later.) Studying in a home environment with lovable dogs was wonderful, especially for the shy kids. The bonus was Stephanie’s college-bound daughter was the assistant teacher. Thus four students had the full attention of two patient, knowledgeable adults. Can’t say that about my daughter’s other camps! Math Camp’s half-day format was ideal for us because it allowed her to exercise her brain in the morning and swim in the afternoon. It was a nice balance and very helpful in avoiding the dreaded “summer slump.” Stephanie, thank you so much for welcoming our little ones into your home. “G” explored the power of math and had a wonderful time doing it!
